Project Profile

Enhanced Kerberos Authentication Protocol Jan’2007-Apr’2007

Kerberos is mutual authentication protocol, which allows both the user and the server to verify each other’s identity. This project focus on designing and implementing Enhanced Kerberos based algorithm for group communication system.kerberos works on the basis of “tickets” which serve to prove the identity of users. The background of the problem is kerberos requires the clocks of the involved hosts to be synchronized since the timing of one host varies with the other hosts. The tickets have time availability period and, if the host is not synchronized with the clock of kerberos server, the authentication will fail. Unauthorized access can occur if a user gets hold of another user’s expired ticket, forges the system time of the workstation so that the already expired ticket becomes valid once again and then uses it to gain an unauthorized access to the server. The solution is to have another separate server called timeserver. This will be separate server running on its own.
Instead of using the time/date on the individual workstations, a separate server called Timeserver provide the time/date to all the servers as well as clients involved in the system. The main components are Authentication Server (AS), Ticket Granting Server (TGS), Time Server (TS) and Application Server.TS provide global timing for all components involved in the system. The client and AS message exchange issue Ticket Granting Ticket (TGT) for authorized users. TGS verify the TGT held within is valid and issue Service Granting Ticket (SGT). Group key is computed based on user request and requested application is executed
Responsibilities:
 Designed and developed code for Login module.
 Used the Java Database Connectivity to access the centralized database
 Integration of various modules, testing and bug fixing
 Design and generated reports
